Lumega-Z and Guardion Health Sciences
Lumega-Z is the only vision-specific Medical Food. It contains all three essential macular carotenoids and a full complement of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients. The original formula was developed by Dr. Sheldon “Shelly” Saul Hendler in 2009. Dr. Hendler was a world-renowned biochemist and nutrition specialist. He was an early innovator in nutrition therapy and personally developed many of the strategies used by physicians around the globe to treat patients using nutrition and medical foods. Dr. Hendler worked closely with Dr. Linus Pauling, the only two-time Nobel Laureate, who famously stated, “Nearly all diseases can be traced to nutritional deficiency.”
“Nearly all diseases can be traced to nutritional deficiency.”
Dr. Hendler is well-known for his work. He authored the original Physician Desk Reference (PDR) For Nutritional Supplements as well as seven other best-selling books about nutrition and health. His counsel was sought by many; he sat on the Scientific Advisory Board of Archer Daniels Midland, the Pharmacy Nutrition Advisory Board of the AARP and the US Olympic Science and Nutrition Subcommittee.

Guardion Health Sciences
Lumega-Z is manufactured and distributed by Guardion Health Sciences. Guardion Health Sciences was created to focus on eye disease and the treatment of these diseases using nutritional therapy. Guardion offers the only evidence-based protocol that incorporates nutritional therapy with world-class measurements to establish the benefits of treatment. These measurements include evaluating the improvement in both the anatomy and performance of the eye.
Guardion holds the United States and European patents on the MapCat device, which is the most accurate measure for macular pigment optical density (MPOD).
With the acquisition of VectorVision Inc in 2017, Guardion added the world leader in standardized contrast sensitivity testing to its protocol.
Using the Guardion Sciences protocol, patients who take Lumega-Z can determine:
1) Using the MapCat, how the treatment is benefiting the anatomy of the eye through increasing the density of the macular pigment
2) Using the VectorVision standardized contrast sensitivity test, how the treatment creates vision improvement and reduces or reverses the vision loss associated with eye disease.
Guardion Health Sciences is headquartered in San Diego, CA and has an impressive array of experts who sit on its Scientific Advisory Board and its Medical Advisory Board. In addition to Lumega-Z, Guardion developed GlaucoCetin, the first regulated vision-specific Medical Food designed to support and protect the mitochondrial function of optic nerve cells in patients with glaucoma.
