Vitamins & minerals for the eyesEating a nutritious diet is critical for the eyes to get the vitamins and minerals they need for optimal health and visual function. But the average American diet does not include enough of the nutrient-rich foods that are good for the eyes. Medical foods are an excellent alternative to diet to help delay or prevent diseases like macular degeneration.

Eye-Healthy Vitamins and Minerals

Lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin: These carotenoids make up the macular pigment, a protective layer that defends the macula against harmful blue light and free radicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in leafy green vegetables and some fruits.

Vitamin A: Found in colorful fruits and vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots, Vitamin A is good for the immune system function, wound healing and night vision. It helps protect the surface of the cornea to reduce the risk of eye infections and other infectious diseases. Although Vitamin A can be an important ingredient, it is best not to take it in conjunction with carotenoids, because the absorption competes with that of the carotenoids.

Vitamin C: This powerful antioxidant helps the body form and maintain collagen in the cornea. It is also good for healthy blood vessels, including those in the retina. Vitamin C is found in red and green peppers, strawberries, broccoli, orange juice and more.

Vitamin B complex (includes vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, folic acid, biotin and choline): Helpful in reducing chronic inflammation and problems with the blood vessels in the retina, Vitamin B complex may also help treat eye inflammation called uveitis.

Vitamin D: Found in the sun’s rays and certain foods, vitamin D can help lower the risk of macular degeneration. It is highly recommended in the winter when most people do not get as much sun exposure in other parts of the year.

Nutrition & ocular healthOmega-3 fatty acids: Commonly found in cold water fish and flaxseed, omega-3 fatty acids are important parts of the membranes that surround the cells in the body. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a main omega-3 fatty acid that exists in high levels in the retina.

Tips for Nutrition Therapy

Consider a multivitamin

To avoid taking separate vitamins, look for a formulation that contains several eye-friendly vitamins and nutrients. Lumega-Z has a full complement of antioxidants, ant-inflammatory, mineral and vitamin ingredients. The image below shows how replacing a daily intake of multiple vitamins with the Lumega-Z medical food is actually better for you, and less expensive.

Don’t substitute nutritional support for a good diet
