L-Taurine Amino Acid

Guardion Health Sciences

L-Taurine amino acidL-Taurine, or simply taurine, is an amino acid — a building block that helps to build the proteins we need to repair, grow and maintain cells. Taurine is a non-essential amino acid, meaning a healthy body produces the minimal amount required for essential daily functions.

However, as we age, our bodies produce less taurine. Also, certain diets (e.g., vegetarian or vegan diets) and diseases like diabetes, cancer or heart failure, can cause a taurine deficiency.

In people who do not produce enough taurine, getting the amino acid through diet or nutritional supplementation can have significant health benefits.

Health Benefits of Taurine

Taurine has many important functions. It is needed for neuromotor and neuromuscular development. It helps to support the function of the central nervous system and the eyes. It promotes immune system health and proper hydration and regulates electrolyte balance within the cells. It can also help regulate minerals like calcium within the cells.

Taurine can benefit your health and wellness in a variety of ways. In fact, some scientists call taurine “a wonder molecule.” Although more research is needed, epidemiological evidence suggests that certain groups that consume higher amounts of taurine, such as people who live in Okinawa, Japan, may have longer life spans compared to those of us in the rest of the world.

There is also evidence to suggest that taurine can:

  • Support the nerve function of the eyes
  • Improve heart health and help or treat congestive heart failure
  • Help fight diabetes by improving blood sugar control
  • Improve sports performance, help the muscles work harder and for longer, reduce fatigue during workouts, increase fat burning during exercise
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Calm the sympathetic nervous system
  • Prevent age-related vision loss and help maintain retinal function/health
  • Prevent epileptic seizures and liver disease
  • Improve or eliminate ringing in the ears caused by tinnitus

Sources of Taurine

Your body can produce taurine, but as you age it no longer produces an optimal amount. Certain diseases and certain medications (e.g., chemotherapy drugs) can also deplete your body of taurine.

Therefore, getting taurine through food sources or supplementation becomes critical. Taurine occurs naturally in animal foods like meats, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy products. However, it is not abundant in most plant foods, so vegetarians and vegans have been shown to have lower levels of taurine.

Taurine is also added to energy drinks and sodas, but drinking large amounts of these beverages can be harmful because of their other ingredients (e.g., large amounts of caffeine, sugar and sugar substitutes).

Taurine Supplements

When taken in proper dosages, taurine is tolerated very well and does not have any known side effects.

One of the best ways to get taurine is through powder supplements, which are absorbed quickly and efficiently by the body. Lumega-Z contains 500 milligrams of taurine, as well as other nutrients packed into one convenient powder that can be easily mixed with your favorite beverage. Lumega-Z is provided in a lipid-based micronized lipid which makes it easy to drink and digest, and your body can absorb the taurine very quickly so you can experience the benefits faster.
